Cleaning a Riyadh majlis: floor seating, sofas, and carpet stains

The majlis is where the house actually sits, so it collects coffee, incense, and dust. Cleaning it is not a wipe along the arm of the sofa.

A floor majlis and a sofa are different jobs

Floor seating sits in the dust and the crumbs, and incense settles on the cloth and the wall beside it. A sofa holds dirt under the cushions, in the corners, and between the fabric and the frame.

• Floor majlis: lift the cushions, clean the floor underneath, then treat the cloth.
• Sofa: under the cushions, behind the back, and the wooden feet. Leather is not soaked.
• Fitted carpet stays down. A rug can be lifted. The method changes because fitted carpet is not carried outside.

The stains that show up in Riyadh

• Arabic coffee and tea on the edge of a cushion.
• Incense smoke that dulls cloth even when you cannot see a spot.
• Fine dust that comes in with the door and sits in the pile.
• Food from a gathering, on the rug in front of the seating.

Do not rub a fresh stain with a wet tissue before you know the fabric. Rubbing spreads coffee and roughs up wool.

Steam, water, and fabric

Steam suits a lot of cotton and mixed cloth, because it lifts dirt from the pile without flooding the seat. Some velvet, silk, and fine wool mats or spots if it gets wet. Tell the crew the fabric, or leave the care label if you still have it.

• Start with a small test on a hidden edge.
• Do not sit until it is dry. Riyadh dries faster than a humid city, but a thick cushion stays damp inside.
• Open the windows. Do not run the AC onto a wet majlis and blow dust back over it.

If the whole house is dirty, wash the majlis with or after a deep clean, not instead of the floors and the grease.

• The colour, and any stain you know the source of.
• Children or pets, so the products match.
• Whether the fitted carpet is actually damp or smells. That is not a surface spot.

Frequently asked questions

Will steam remove years of incense?

It lightens the yellowing and the smell on many fabrics. Old yellowing in wool can leave a trace. The test patch shows the limit before the whole piece is done.

Can I use carpet foam on the sofa myself?

Carpet foam on leather or velvet wrecks the surface. If you do not know the material, leave it.

How long until we can sit again?

Until it is dry inside, not only on the face. On a dry Riyadh day a light piece may be ready by afternoon. Thick cushions take longer. The crew tells you before they leave.

Are curtains included?

Only if you ask. Heavy curtains are extra, especially when they cannot be taken down.
