When to wash your AC in Riyadh: a guide to cleaning air conditioners before summer

In Riyadh the AC runs most of the year and faces more dust than any coastal city. It gets dirty faster, and you notice it in weaker cooling, a higher bill and a musty smell.

Why ACs in Riyadh get dirty so fast

  • Fine dust and sandstorm waves in spring and early summer.
  • A cooling season that lasts for months.
  • Round-the-clock running in summer.

The filter is the first line of defence. Once it clogs with dust, the unit has to work harder to deliver the same cooling.

  • Indoor filter: roughly every two weeks during the cooling season. This is the advice of the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center's campaigns, which also recommend setting the AC to 24 °C and keeping doors and windows closed.
  • Deep wash of the indoor and outdoor units: before summer, and again after it, or mid-season if use is heavy.
  • Full check of leaks, refrigerant pressure and controls: at least once a year.

What you can do yourself vs what needs a technician

Do it yourself

  • Remove the indoor filter, wash it with water and let it dry before refitting.
  • Wipe the front of the indoor unit.
  • Make sure nothing blocks airflow around the outdoor unit.

Needs a technician

  • Washing the coil and indoor fan with proper products.
  • Clearing the drain line and condensate tray.
  • Washing the outdoor unit at the right pressure without bending the fins.
  • Checking refrigerant and electrical connections.

Symptoms of a dirty AC and likely causes

  • Weak cooling: dirty filter or coil, sometimes low refrigerant.
  • Bad smell: dirt and moisture built up inside the unit.
  • Dripping water: a blocked drain line.
  • Loud noise: dust on the fan or a loose part.
  • A higher bill than usual: the unit is working harder to make up for the dirt.

Does an AC wash lower the bill?

Yes. Air conditioning is the largest part of the electricity bill in Saudi homes, especially in summer, and a clean unit reaches the set temperature with less effort. Regular filter cleaning and a pre-summer wash are among the easiest ways to save.

How a professional split-unit wash is done

  • Power off; cover the wall and floor under the unit.
  • Remove and wash the filters.
  • Wash the coil and fan with suitable products, collecting the water in a drain bag.
  • Clean the condensate tray and drain line.
  • Wash the outdoor unit.
  • Run the unit and check cooling and that nothing drips.

What sets the price of an AC wash

  • AC type: split, window, concealed, central.
  • Number of units in the home or office.
  • Access to the outdoor units.
  • Whether a chemical wash or duct cleaning is needed.

The starting price per unit is on the prices page.

Check the AC filter after every dust storm; the rest of the steps are in cleaning your home after a dust storm.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to wash my AC in Riyadh?

Before the heat arrives, in spring, and after dust waves. Book early, because slots fill up as soon as summer starts.

How long does a split-unit wash take?

Usually 30 to 60 minutes per unit, depending on its condition and access.

Do I need a refrigerant top-up every year?

No. Refrigerant only runs low if there is a leak. If cooling is still weak after a wash, an inspection shows whether a leak needs repairing.

Should ACs be washed after renovation work?

Yes. Plaster and cement dust gets into AC units in large amounts, which is why it is on the post-construction cleaning checklist.

The short version

Clean the filter every two weeks and wash the unit before summer, and you will feel the difference in the cooling and see it on the bill. Book an AC wash, or see the service details.
